Vaucluse’s county town was marked by the pope who lived there in the XIV century. Though nothing much remains from the roman city, the medieval town with its the walls, its towers and its bell towers has been well-preserved. Just behind Le Palais des Papes, le Jardin du rocher des Doms (« Doms’ rock garden ») offers a gorgeous view over the Rhone and Barthelasse Island.

Besides the famous Pont d’AvignonAvignon’s bridge ») where people still dance on July 14, you’ll see many churches and cloisters Fort St André and its XI century abbey for instance. You’ll also find some very beautiful mansions or palaces that were built between the XIV and the XVII century. L’hôtel de Crochans became La maison Jean Villar (National Library annex). For 53 years, Avignon has been hosting the International Theater Festival ( from July 10 to 31).

During the Avignon festival, the whole crowded town is covered with posters. Trumpets announce the beginning of each show. Besides this festival, it’s a cultural place where arts festivals and classical concerts take place all year long. The various exhibitions are also worth-seeing.
