Bordeaux tourist information
Crassus had good taste when he set up his troops here during the Gallic wars. One of Julius Caesar’s lieutenants, he gave Burdigala the chance to know its first period of prosperity. Wines were imported from Italy and very soon a vine from Albania, the " biturica " was planted here. In the C.12th , century Henry Plantagenet ascended the English throne and there followed a period in which Aquitaine was under the dominion of the English crown. The Anglo-Gascons controlled the region until its reconquest by France. But the tradition of exchanges with Northern states was already well implanted and would serve Bordeaux for centuries. In the C.14th Flemish, English and German merchants set up in the Chartrons quarter and made it a trading quarter. It is they who export and promote the Bordeaux wine production. However, it is the trade with the colonies which will bring wealth to the town in the C.18th.
And mark its architecture. The trade in spices allows the town to endow itself with splendid buildings of golden stone which are still its pride. The Sacred Triangle which is made up of the Allées de Tourny, the Cours Clémenceau and the Intendance, and at whose vortex the architect Victor Louis built the Grand Théâtre gives you some idea of that flourishing period. The Industrial Revolution hardly effects the town , its activity slows down and it is only after Second World War that the aeronautical industry gives new impetus to the town. A port but also a town turned towards the land Bordeaux receives all the local production of the Aquitaine region. Because of this the town is proud of its great gastronomic tradition.. Bazas rib steak,Arcachon oysters, Gironde lamprey, Pauillac lamb, foie gras and confit from the Landes and Périgord, delicatessen products and cheeses from the Pays Basque and the Béarn. And of course, wine.It is the wine that goes on making its fortune for the wine trade still represents a five billion franc annual turnover.
It is pleasant to wander in the Bordeaux streets at nightfall.. In the Saint Pierre quarter, look up the lively bars where young people are always enjoying themselves and why not go to the Barbey Rock School where the latest music blares out. It is not only the regional capital of Aquitaine that can look forward to many a pleasant day, the tourist can too.
