Concorde La Fayette Hotel description
The Hotel Concorde La Fayette is ideally situated close to the Champs Elysées and the business quarter of La Défense. From the top of its 34 stories, it dominates the French capital and crowns the Centre International de Paris, a major congress, exhibition, and luxury shopping complex.
The Porte Maillot (Maillot Gate), for which the Concorde La Fayette is the landmark for Parisians, takes its name from the "jeu de mail" (mail game), a form of croquet invented during the reign of François 1st. This quarter was annexed by the Capital in 1860. One particular event marked the history of the quarter and it traces still remain:
On 13th July 1842, the Duc d'Orléans, eldest son of the King Louis-Philippe, had a fatal accident after jumping out of a moving carriage when its horses had bolted. On the very spot where the drama took place, Queen Marie-Amélie had a commemorative chapel built. With its curious "romantico-byzantine" style, it was classified as an historic monument in 1929; a fact which saved it from demolition in 1971, when the first work on the Centre International de Paris started. The chapel was dismantled, moved to a new site nearby, and rebuilt stone by stone under the careful supervision of the architect Bazelaire de Rupière and Mr. Denizet, the head architect of the Monuments de Paris. It is presently located on the corner of the Avenue de la Porte de Ternes and the Boulevard Aurelle de Paladines.
Between the two World Wars, the Luna Park amusement park, with its big dipper, its tunnel of love and its hall of mirrors, was installed on the very site of the Centre International de Paris and the Hotel Concorde La Fayette. However, the city of Paris was already studying changes to the layout to this major access route into the Capital. To this end, in 1920, and then again in 1930, urban design competitions were held, with A. Perret and Le Corbusier amongst the participants. For his part, Gilbert wanted to create an immense green park.
Its 1,000 rooms boast a unique blend of
luxury accomodations with the facilities
of an office.
